Visions in Motion | Patrick Shearn | Art Installation at Brandenburg Gate | until 10.11.2019

On November 1, 2019, the messages of the art installation “Visions in Motion” by artist Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics rose into the air at the Brandenburg Gate. As part of the celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall, 30,000 wishes, hopes and ideas will float on 30,000 people’s ribbons as part of the installation above the Straße des 17. Juni at the Brandenburg Gate until 10 November. Together with Moritz van Dülmen and Simone Leimbach, managing director and project manager of Kulturprojekte Berlin, the artist gave an insight into the floating installation.

Following the banners carried during the demonstrations of the Peaceful Revolution, tens of thousands of people in hundreds of workshops – including those of the Evangelical Church – have been involved in events and actions in schools, on the streets as well as at festivals, with their messages, wishes and hopes for the future or even their memories of the past.

From the partly reflecting, differently coloured “embassy ribbons” a so-called skynet in the typical style of the artist develops, which stretches apparently weightlessly from the Lindenrondell from approximately 150 meters above the street of the 17th of June into the sky. Hundreds of thousands of people courageously raised their voices during the Peaceful Revolution and thus contributed to the fall of the Wall. The handcrafted art installation recalls this commitment and in its rectangular form is based on the former Wall – but at the same time permeable and constantly in motion.

Another artistic and participatory examination of the peaceful revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall is the participative film project “Aus Mut gemacht” (Made of Courage) with children and young people. What does courage mean for children and young people today? During the festival week project, school classes and groups from all over Berlin shot short videos on this topic and found their personal answers – in formats such as eyewitness interviews, stop motion and animation, music videos or short documentaries. During the conception phase, the participants* were accompanied in workshops in cooperation with the film project partner ALEX Berlin and were able to learn about editing and camera work, discuss film ideas and develop them further.

The response was high. A total of 53 short films in various genres were submitted. A selection of 15 short films will be presented at an exclusive premiere at the Cubix cinema on Alexanderplatz. All films can be seen in full length on two dates during the festival week in the programme pavilion at Alexanderplatz.
